How does a basal digital thermometer help?
How does the thermometer work?
This thermometer is designed specifically for fertility charting - as it tests to 2 decimal places, allowing you to track smaller increments of change. The thermometer itself is a simple-to-use Celcius digital thermometer that can be used underneath the armpit, mouth/orally or rectally. It is auto-correcting, reads your temperature in under 2 minutes, and automatically gives a beep when your temperature has peaked. It also has a memory recall function, so when you turn on the last temperature record will be displayed briefly. It comes complete with a button cell-type battery, and we can provide replacement batteries if required. The battery life is around 2 years but less if used on a daily basis. The unit should be switched off once the reading is taken but will switch off automatically after 10 minutes if no button is pressed. The thermometer is fully CE-approved, as are all the items we sell.
When should I take my temperature?
You should take your temperature orally under the tongue every morning before you do anything else – even before you get up!! Just the act of getting up increases body temperature so keep the thermometer right by the bed. You should then write down the temperature recorded. The temperature rise (spike) occurs shortly after ovulation and will stay slightly elevated until you start your next period.
Why do I need it to be to 2 decimal places?
Why should I keep a Fertility chart?
There is only a very small window within each cycle when your body releases an egg. This window, which may last only 36 hours, is the only time you can get pregnant during that cycle so knowing how to pinpoint the timing when the egg is released can be very important. The chart will help you plot you cycle in a graph using basal body temperature.
How to Use a Basal Thermometer for Fertility Charting
Basal body temperature (BBT) charting is a simple, natural way to track your fertility by monitoring your body’s basal temperature (your lowest resting temperature). Here's a step-by-step guide to get you started.
What You’ll Need: A basal thermometer, which is more sensitive than a regular thermometer and measures temperature to two decimal places (e.g., 36.55°C); a fertility chart (either a paper chart or a fertility tracking app to log your temperatures); and optionally, an LH predictor kit to cross-reference your BBT data with ovulation test results (available at www.minilabhealthcare.com).
Step-by-Step Instructions:
-
Choose a Consistent Time to Measure Your BBT: Measure your temperature first thing in the morning, at the same time every day, before getting out of bed, talking, or drinking water. Any activity can affect the reading. Ensure you’ve had at least 3–4 hours of uninterrupted sleep before taking your temperature.
-
Take Your Temperature Correctly: Use your basal thermometer orally, vaginally, or rectally—just be consistent with the method you choose. If using orally, place the thermometer under your tongue. Wait for the beep or follow the manufacturer’s instructions, then record the temperature.
-
Record Your Temperature: Log your temperature daily in a paper chart or an app. Small fluctuations are normal, but look for a pattern throughout the cycle: Before ovulation, BBT is typically lower (around 36.1°C–36.5°C). After ovulation, progesterone causes a temperature increase of about 0.2°C–0.5°C above pre-ovulation levels.
-
Identify the Temperature Shift: After ovulation, you’ll notice a sustained rise in BBT. This confirms ovulation has occurred. The temperature shift marks the luteal phase (post-ovulation), during which your temperature remains elevated until your next period.
-
Use BBT for Fertility Awareness: You are most fertile in the days leading up to the temperature spike. Combine BBT tracking with other ovulation signs (e.g., changes in cervical mucus) to pinpoint ovulation.
-
Cross-Reference with an LH Predictor Kit: An LH predictor kit detects the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge, which occurs 24–36 hours before ovulation. Using an LH kit alongside BBT charting gives a more complete picture of your fertile window: The LH kit predicts ovulation, while the BBT chart confirms when ovulation has occurred.
Fertility Charting Apps and Free Printable Charts:
- Free Apps for BBT Charting: Kindara, which allows you to record BBT, cervical mucus, and other fertility signs, as well as create customized charts. Fertility Friend, a comprehensive app for tracking BBT, cervical mucus, and ovulation symptoms, offering detailed analysis of your charts. Ovia Fertility, a user-friendly app that tracks BBT and provides insights into your fertility window, cycle predictions, and ovulation symptoms.
- Free Resources for Printable Charts: Fertility Friend, which offers free printable BBT charts. TCM Fertility Chart, which provides downloadable templates for tracking BBT and fertility signs. Taking Charge of Your Fertility (TCOYF), which offers printable charts based on the Fertility Awareness Method (FAM).
Tips for Accurate Charting: Ensure consistency in the time of day and method used to take your temperature. Avoid eating, drinking, or significant movement before taking your BBT. Track additional fertility signs, such as cervical mucus and ovulation pain, for a more comprehensive view of your cycle.
Benefits of Combining BBT with an LH Kit: By combining BBT charting with an LH predictor kit, you get two layers of confirmation for your fertile window: an LH predictor kit alerts you when ovulation is imminent, while BBT charting confirms that ovulation has occurred, helping you fine-tune your understanding of your cycle. With practice, combining BBT charting and LH kits becomes a powerful tool for tracking your fertility and identifying your optimal fertile days.
